Saint-Paul de Fenouillet
Les origines du sanctuaire

The incomparable site of Galamus also owes its prestige to the sanctuary nestled in the side of the rocks.

Isolated hermits from all over the world began to settle there and lived their faith in the image of Saint Anthony the Great, patriarch of the Cenobites.

In the fifteenth century, the Friars Minor of St. Francis of Assisi established the cave-chapel which became a hermitage.
The sanctuary remains a major pilgrimage site, especially on Easter Monday for Occitans and Whit Monday for the whole of southern Occitania and Catalonia.

We owe to Saint Anthony the Great, the deliverance from the “sweat” disease that raged in the village in 1782.

For a long time, the hermitage kept the relics of the Holy Cross, of Saint Victory, of Father Palau y Quer, beatified in 1988. Father Chiron, who helped make this shrine famous, died in the odour of sanctity.
