Saint-Paul de Fenouillet
Le bâtiment le plus symbolique
The most symbolic building of Saint-Paul is its “Chapter” classified as a Historic Monument, and especially the seventeenth century bell tower which overlooks its chapel.
Former Benedictine abbey in the tenth century that became a collegiate chapter
in the fourteenth century, the date of the construction of the church’s shell. This collegiate church, which was very rich until the end of the eighteenth century, was unfortunately sold at auction during the Revolution and transformed into private apartments. Major restoration work is planned by the Ministries of Culture and Historic Buildings as well as by the municipality in order to restore it to its former magnificence: the seventeenth century in all its splendour thanks to an impressive decoration in plasterwork (stuccoes), bas-relief sculptures, moldings and twisted columns.
From the top of its beautiful heptagonal bell tower, unique in Languedoc-Roussillon, a beautiful panoramic view opens up to your eyes: Galamus,
the Clue de la Fou, the Saint-Paul valley and its vineyards.
